Planning & Building a Pond
Do I need council approval to build a pond?
Requirements for residential ponds can vary between states, territories and local councils. Depending on the size, depth and location of your pond, there may be requirements relating to approvals, fencing, barriers or child safety.
Before starting construction, we recommend checking with your local council or relevant authority to understand the requirements that apply to your property.
Should I choose a preformed pond or pond liner?
Preformed ponds and flexible pond liner are two of the most popular ways to create a garden pond, with each offering different benefits.
Preformed ponds are a simple and convenient option, with the shape and depth already formed for you. They’re ideal for smaller garden ponds and projects where you want to make installation as straightforward as possible. PondMAX offers preformed ponds in a range of shapes and sizes to suit different garden spaces.
Pond liner provides greater flexibility, allowing you to create a pond in almost any shape, size or depth. It’s an excellent choice for larger ponds or when you have a particular design in mind.
Your local PondMAX dealer can help you determine which option is best suited to your space, project and budget.
What are the benefits of a preformed pond?
Preformed ponds take much of the guesswork out of creating a pond. Their ready-made shape provides a clear guide for excavation and makes it easier to visualise the finished pond before you begin.
They’re a great option for DIY projects, compact gardens and anyone looking for a straightforward way to introduce a pond into their outdoor space.
PondMAX preformed ponds are available in different shapes and capacities, giving you options to suit a variety of garden designs.
How do I install a preformed pond?
Start by positioning the preformed pond where you’d like it installed and marking its outline. Excavate the area to match the shape and depth of the pond, ensuring the base is stable and level.
Position the pond carefully and check that it remains level as you backfill around the outside and gradually add water.
Always refer to the installation instructions for your specific PondMAX preformed pond before beginning your project.
How do I choose the right pond liner?
The right liner will depend on the dimensions and design of your pond.
Flexible pond liner is particularly useful when creating larger ponds, irregular shapes or a custom design, as it gives you greater freedom over the final size, shape and depth.
Choose a quality pond liner designed specifically for pond applications and make sure you accurately calculate the amount required before purchasing.
When should I buy my pond liner?
We recommend finalising the shape and dimensions of your pond before purchasing your liner.
Once the excavation is complete, you can accurately measure the length, width and depth required, including sufficient overlap around the edges. This helps avoid purchasing too little liner or significantly more than you need.
Can pond liner be joined?
Yes. Depending on the liner material, pond liners can be joined or repaired using compatible joining products.
PVC and EPDM liners require different joining methods, so always use products specifically designed for your type of liner and follow the manufacturer’s instructions carefully.
Pond Pumps
How do I choose the right pump for my pond?
Choosing the right pump depends on what you need it to do.
Consider the volume of your pond, required flow rate, filtration system, pipework and whether the pump will also operate a waterfall, fountain or water feature. The height the water needs to be pumped, known as head height, is also an important consideration.
Your local PondMAX dealer can help you select the right pump for your application.
Should my pond pump run all the time?
If your pump is supplying a biological filtration system, it will generally need to operate continuously to maintain water circulation and support the beneficial bacteria within the filter.
Pumps used only for decorative fountains or water features may not need to operate continuously.
Why has the flow from my pond pump reduced?
Reduced water flow can be caused by several factors, including a blocked pump intake, dirty filter, restricted pipework, excessive head height or debris around the impeller.
Regular inspection and cleaning can help maintain pump performance. Always switch off and disconnect electrical equipment before carrying out maintenance.
Filtration & Water Quality
Why does my pond need filtration?
Filtration helps maintain a healthier and clearer pond by removing debris and supporting the biological processes that break down fish waste and other organic material.
A properly sized filtration system is particularly important for ponds containing fish, where waste places additional pressure on water quality.
How does biological filtration work?
Biological filtration provides an environment for beneficial bacteria to establish. These bacteria help break down waste products produced by fish, uneaten food and decomposing organic material through a natural process known as the nitrogen cycle.
Maintaining good circulation, oxygen levels and biological filtration helps support a healthier pond environment.
What does a UV clarifier do?
A UV clarifier helps control free-floating algae that can cause green pond water.
As pond water passes through the unit, ultraviolet light acts on the suspended algae, allowing it to clump together so it can be more effectively removed by the filtration system.
Why is my pond water green?
Green water is commonly caused by free-floating algae. Factors such as sunlight, excess nutrients, fish waste, decomposing organic material and inadequate filtration can all contribute.
The right combination of filtration, UV clarification, circulation and ongoing pond maintenance can help manage green water.
How often should I clean my pond filter?
There isn’t one cleaning schedule that suits every pond. The frequency will depend on factors including pond size, fish population, surrounding vegetation, weather and the type of filtration system being used.
Monitor the performance of your filter and follow the cleaning and maintenance recommendations provided with your particular model.
Do pond filters need to run 24 hours a day?
Biological filtration systems should generally operate continuously. Turning the system off for extended periods reduces water circulation and oxygen supply to the beneficial bacteria living within the filter.
Aeration
Why is aeration important in a pond?
Aeration increases water movement and helps improve oxygen exchange between the water and atmosphere.
Good oxygen levels support fish, beneficial bacteria and the overall biological health of your pond, particularly during warmer weather when water naturally holds less dissolved oxygen.
Does my pond need an aerator if I already have a pump?
It depends on your pond.
A pump, waterfall or fountain may provide some water movement and oxygen exchange, but additional aeration can be beneficial for ponds with larger fish populations, limited surface movement or higher oxygen demand.
Should pond aeration run all the time?
Continuous aeration can provide consistent water movement and oxygenation, particularly in fish ponds and during warmer conditions.
The requirements of each pond are different, so your local PondMAX dealer can help determine the most suitable aeration setup.
Fish & Fish Food
How often should I feed my pond fish?
How often you feed your fish will depend on the species, water temperature and time of year.
Only provide an amount your fish can comfortably consume within a short period. Overfeeding can leave uneaten food in the pond, contributing to excess nutrients and poorer water quality.
Can overfeeding affect my pond water?
Yes. Uneaten fish food eventually breaks down, adding nutrients and organic waste to the pond.
Feeding an appropriate amount helps reduce waste and makes it easier for your filtration system to maintain good water quality.
What should I look for when choosing pond fish food?
Choose a quality food appropriate for the type and size of fish you keep. A balanced diet helps support fish condition, growth and overall health.
PondMAX offers fish food options designed for popular pond fish species.
Pond Maintenance
How often should I maintain my pond?
Regular, simple maintenance is generally better than waiting until a problem develops.
Depending on your pond, this can include removing leaves and debris, checking pumps and filters, monitoring water quality, cleaning equipment and checking fish health.
Seasonal changes may also affect how frequently maintenance is required.
How can I reduce debris in my pond?
Remove fallen leaves and organic material regularly before they have an opportunity to break down.
Skimmers, nets and appropriate filtration can also help manage debris, particularly where ponds are located close to trees and garden beds.
Should I completely drain my pond to clean it?
In most situations, completely draining an established pond isn’t necessary for routine maintenance and can disrupt its biological balance.
Regular removal of debris, appropriate filtration and partial water changes when required are generally preferable. More extensive cleaning may be necessary in certain circumstances.
